TBR View: Sporting offer is the ideal transfer for Man City
Sporting’s offer for Mendes is an ideal transfer scenario for Man City.
The squad is packed to the rafters with talent at full-back. Signing Mendes would only further saturate the position.
However, with Sporting’s offer to acquire him ahead of the 2022/2023 campaign, there is an opportunity to plan for the future.
Oleksander Zinchenko performed well last season and will most likely hold down a spot next season. Meanwhile, Joao Cancelo has been known to feature at left-back on occasions.
Signing Mendes this summer would consign him to a role on the bench with hardly any game time. The 18-year-old would lose out on a season of development.
However, taking up the Liga NOS champions’ offer of signing him now ahead of next summer means he can further develop next season. It also means the Premier League champions can secure his transfer ahead of any potential rivals.
Mendes’ talents makes him a key acquisition for the Etihad Stadium outfit. City’s rejection of Sporting’s most recent offer proves baffling especially given how ideal it proves for Guardiola’s team.
