Report: Fonseca now second choice at Newcastle as European emerges as new favourite

Reports from Germany this evening are claiming that Lucien Favre is now the new favourite to succeed Steve Bruce as Newcastle United manager.

According to respected publication , the former Dortmund coach has moved alongside and even ahead of Paulo Fonseca in the eyes of some at the Magpies.

Newcastle are working frantically to get a new manager in. Favre, 63, is one of the names who has been linked with the club in recent weeks. However, report tonight is the first indication he is in pole position for the job.

The Swiss coach has a wealth of experience on the continent and most recently had a spell with Dortmund in the Bundesliga. Previous spells have seen him take charge at Nice, Hertha Berlin, and the Swiss national team.

For Fonseca, the wait goes on it seems. The Portuguese coach had been tipped all weekend to become the new Newcastle boss. However, it seems Favre could now pip him to the post.

TBR View: Newcastle opting for experience with Favre?

It certainly looks that way from the outside in. Favre might well be a shorter term option for PIF as they look to steer the club clear of relegation in the first instance.

Favre’s experience is massive. At 63, he’s been there and done it in European football and his spell in Dortmund shows he knows how to be around a passionate fanbase.

If Newcastle do appoint Favre, it will be interesting to see what sort of deal they give him. For Fonseca, it just seems to be the case of never getting that job in England.
