Report: Liverpool want Malick Thiaw as Schalke look to agree new contract

Liverpool are hoping to make a move to sign Malick Thiaw, , and the Schalke youngster could be available for just £7 million.

Thiaw only made his debut for the Bundesliga side earlier this month. He was actually brought on for Everton loanee Jonjoe Kenny during their 1-1 draw with Hoffenheim.

Nevertheless, he could soon be on his way to the Premier League leaders. that the Reds have been monitoring the 18-year-old closely.

The Mirror notes that he has drawn comparisons with current Liverpool star Joel Matip, who signed from the German side in 2016.

Liverpool signed Matip on a free transfer. And they are also looking at landing Thiaw for a bargain fee, with the Mirror reporting that his contract includes a £7 million release clause.

The Daily Mirror suggests that Schalke are working to try and agree a new deal that would take that release clause out of the equation, so the Reds may need to act quickly. It is noted that those talks are currently on hold, which may help Jurgen Klopp’s men.

TBR View – Liverpool right to look at new centre-backs

Liverpool look to be cruising to the league title this season. But they are arguably right to look at strengthening their options at centre-back this summer.

Virgil van Dijk remains one of the world’s best. And Joe Gomez has been outstanding over the last couple of years. Meanwhile, Matip has rarely let the team down when called upon.

But Dejan Lovren will be 31 by the time next season arrives – and maybe even by the time this campaign finishes – and he struggled in his only league appearance of 2020.

The Reds do look to have some exciting prospects coming through. And adding Thiaw to those ranks could prove to be an inspired piece of business.
