Report: Liverpool to trigger Diego Carlos’ release clause next summer

Liverpool will reportedly activate the release clause of Sevilla defender Diego Carlos next summer.

, the Reds are set to beat Real Madrid to the Brazilian, who has been a revelation at the back for the Europa League club following his summer move from Nantes, with personal terms agreed.

Carlos was the club’s first signing of the summer by returning sporting director Monchi, and he has made 20 appearances in all competitions so far.

When Sevilla signed him they included a €75 million/£64 million release clause, which the Reds now apparently intend to pay.

It is thought Real Madrid see him as a long-term replacement for veteran defender Sergio Ramos, who turns 34 in a few months.

But it seems that Liverpool are leading the chase according to El Desmarque.

TBR’s view – A Lovren upgrade

Liverpool could well offset the cost of signing Carlos a bit with the sale of Dejan Lovren.

There have been murmurs he might be moving on at the end of the season, and Carlos coming in as a possible replacement would be a big upgrade.

The South American is a mobile, ball-playing type who appears to be much more assured than the Croatian.

£64 million would be a lot of money, but Liverpool’s approach to transfers these days is very impressive and so any move will have been heavily considered.
