Report: Liverpool to step up interest in RedBull Salzburg star, £7.25m release clause

Liverpool are ready to ‘accelerate’ their interest in RedBull Salzburg star Takumi Minamino, who could be available for a bargain fee of £7.25million due to a release clause inserted in his contract.

The 24-year-old has starred against Liverpool in the Champions League this season, even scoring and laying on an assist in the 4-3 defeat at Anfield. He has clocked up 66.8 kilometres in his six Champions League group stage appearances this term.

A 22-time Japan international, Minamino has been in stunning form for Salzburg. He has scored nine goals in 22 games this season from attacking midfield, as well as laying on 11 assists for his teammates. He has netted 64 goals in 199 Salzburg games.

But Jurgen Klopp has had his eye on Minamino before the Champions League outings, and those matches will have only convinced him to make a move. Liverpool believe Minamino is worth in excess of £20million, and are ‘close’.

TBR’s view – Minamino is a Liverpool bargain for just £7.25m

Minamino has shown in the Champions League that not only can he add plenty of attacking flair to Liverpool’s side, but he is fit enough to cope with the Reds’ high press, and he offers versatility.

The Japanese ace can play in central midfield – in front of Fabinho – as well as occupying the number 10 role. Minamino has also been used on either flank this season by impressive Salzburg manager Jesse Marsch.
