Report: Liverpool target move for England hopeful Alex McCarthy
Liverpool are ready to look to Southampton yet again for another signing. , Liverpool are eyeing a move for Southampton goalkeeper Alex McCarthy.
Jurgen Klopp wants a new second-choice goalkeeper this summer. The first-choice is Alisson Becker but needs a back-up option to provide depth and competition.
Simon Mignolet filled that role last summer but he is on his way out. Loris Karius does not seem to have a future at Merseyside, either.
McCarthy could move to Anfield to become Liverpool’s back-up goalkeeper. At the moment, he fills that role for Southampton after losing his starting spot to Angus Gunn.

The 29-year-old is still a consistent and experienced performer in the Premier League. And joining Liverpool could boost his hopes of regaining his spot in the England side and adding to his one cap.
Liverpool have signed numerous players from Southampton in recent years. If McCarthy joins, he will follow in the footsteps of Rickie Lambert, Nathaniel Clyne, Adam Lallana, Dejan Lovren and Virgil Van Dijk in swapping Southampton for Liverpool.
TBR’s view
McCarthy would know the deal if he joins; he will not realistically replace impressive Brazilian Alisson between the sticks. Instead, he will provide cover in case of injury and get the occasional cup outing.
For Liverpool, this deal makes sense. McCarthy is a proven Premier League performer who would also boost the homegrown quota. At the right price, this could be shrewd, if unspectacular, business.
