Report: Liverpool set to open talks with ‘outstanding’ defender over new contract but know it won’t be straightforward
Liverpool are set to offer a new contract to defender Joe Gomez but know it might not be easy to get him to sign it, as per the
Gomez has slipped down to fourth choice in the central defensive pecking order and that has seen him drop out of the England reckoning too.
The World Cup is around the corner and Gomez has the quality to be a big part of Gareth Southgate’s plans, but he will not go to Qatar if he is not playing regularly.
Gomez has also been used at right-back as Liverpool chase all four trophies, with Jurgen Klopp calling a display in that position against Watford in April ‘outstanding’.
Liverpool offer Gomez new contract
Their report reads: “Liverpool will look to tie Joe Gomez down to a new contract this summer despite ongoing speculation about his Reds future.
“The 24-year-old is out of contract in 2024. But despite his lack of game-time this season, Gomez remains part of Liverpool’s plans.
“The club have tasked Julian Ward with looking to tie down the defender to a new deal this summer.
“However, they appreciate such a prospect could be easier said than done depending on how the defender views his own situation. If Gomez does sign a new contract at Anfield, it would increase the likelihood of Nat Phillips departing on a permanent basis this summer.“
“Phillips remains under-contract at Anfield for the foreseeable future after signing fresh terms last summer, and the ECHO understands talks will be held regarding his future following the conclusion of the season once all parties have considered their stance.
“And with Rhys Williams impressing Reds bosses after returning from his loan with Swansea City in January, he is poised to replace his fellow defender as Liverpool’s ‘fifth-choice’ option at centre-back.”
It would be understandable if Gomez wanted to try and go somewhere and play more often, but he is currently a part of a squad challenging on all fronts.
Is getting back into the England squad worth chasing at the expense of going to a club who can’t challenge in the same way Liverpool are?
That is the dilemma for Gomez, although it looks like it would be worthwhile Phillips leaving if he is down at sixth choice ahead of next season and he surely has the prospect of joining a Premier League club.
