Report: Liverpool see Nat Phillips as a future replacement for Matip
Nat Phillips has forced Liverpool into a rethink after the Reds were ready to sell the centre-back this summer, with the club now viewing the Englishman as a potential future replacement for Joel Matip, according to a report from the .
It has been a bizarre couple of years for Phillips. He was a revelation towards the end of the 2020/21 season as Jurgen Klopp’s men dealt with a remarkable injury crisis.

However, he barely featured during the first-half of this past season. In fact, he failed to make a single Premier League appearance.
Klopp left the door open for Phillips to join Bournemouth on loan in January. And he went on to play all but one of the Cherries’ Championship games following his move, helping them to promotion.

It seems that Liverpool were happy to sell the 25-year-old this summer. However, reports that the Reds have now had a change of heart.
His form has convinced Liverpool that he could have a future at Anfield. In fact, they believe that he could one day replace Matip. And with that, any departure this summer is likely to only be on loan, with Bournemouth keen to bring him back.

Phillips a future replacement for Matip
Liverpool are in a difficult position with Phillips. He is not as talented as Virgil van Dijk or Ibrahima Konate. But he certainly has the potential to be a cult-hero for the club.
Unfortunately, giving him the playing time he wants is tough right now. So it is understandable that they were considering letting him go permanently.
But if they could keep him, it could prove to be a really smart decision. Jordan Henderson previously labelled him ‘brilliant‘ and suggested that many do not realise just how good he is.
And whenever he has featured for Liverpool, he has stepped up.
So a Premier League loan may be the ideal next step for Phillips and the Reds.
