Report: Liverpool have been in talks to sign defender for weeks, asking price reduced

that Liverpool have been in talks to sign Schalke defender Ozan Kabak for several weeks, and the centre-back could be signed in a cut-price deal – as Schalke continue to suffer financial woes.

Schalke are desperate for an injection of cash and they are seemingly open to selling their centre-back starlet in order to help that. Kabak, 20, joined Schalke in the summer of 2019 – and has since been in excellent form.

Kabak came through the ranks at Galatasaray before joining Stuttgart. Just 17 appearances for Stuttgart saw Schalke move, with Stuttgart suffering relegation to the second-tier of German football. He cost Schalke about £13million.

Now, Liverpool are keen after just 31 Schalke games. The report claims Liverpool have been in talks for several weeks over a move to sign the Turkish stopper, and that his asking price has dropped by £9million – to £22million.

TBR’s view – Is Kabak good enough to solve Liverpool issues?

Joel Matip returned to action last weekend as the Reds earned a 1-1 draw with Manchester City. Fabinho and Virgil van Dijk remain on the sidelines through injury, while Dejan Lovren moved to Zenit.

With everyone fit, Liverpool have just three fit senior defenders in van Dijk, Matip and Joe Gomez – while Nat Phillips and Rhys Williams continue to play for the Under-23 side. Do Liverpool need a centre-back?

They do, but one that is happy to wait for his chance. A younger player is much better than one who is in the prime of his career and that means Kabak would be the ideal addition – especially as per his reduced asking price.
