Report: Liverpool face new challenge for £18m table-topper previously deemed Anfield-bound

Reported Liverpool target Ugurcan Cakir was deemed Anfield-bound by his former coach but a new report claims another team has joined the race for the goalkeeper’s services.

, Roma have thrown their name in the hat for Cakir, with Liverpool reportedly vying alongside Premier League rivals Everton and Tottenham Hotspur.

Cakir, widely regarded as one of the best players in Turkey, plies his trade for Trabzonspor, his efforts this season helping the team to the top of the Superlig table.

Liverpool reportedly saw a €15million (£13.5million) offer rejected last summer, according to Turkish outlet , and ended up signing Adrian instead.

Cakir’s former coach, Sadi Tekelioglu, recently told : “Liverpool will transfer Ugurcan Cakır at the end of the season.

“Trabzonspor will not say no to Liverpool’s offer. I met with Ugurcan. He told me that Liverpool took care of him.”

Despite Tekelioglu’s bold comments regarding Cakir’s future, it seems as though the race remains wide open for his signature and Liverpool aren’t home and dry.

Trabzonspor president Ahmet Agaoglu, who recently described the 24-year-old as one of the top three , says his club have received an offer of around for him.

While Liverpool currently have Alisson Becker, Adrian, Caoimhin Kelleher and Loris Karius in their ranks, at first glance it doesn’t seem as though they’re particularly desperate for a new stopper.

However, given Cakir’s quality and age, which means further potential and progress on the cards, who’s to say Jurgen Klopp couldn’t move one or two of the latter three on and bring in one of Europe’s most promising young stoppers?

Of course, with Roma now reportedly in pursuit, it could come down over who could offer him the most first-team football, in which case the Reds probably won’t be able to give him what he wants.
