Report: Leicester to battle Chelsea for Jonathan Ikone

Leicester City have joined Chelsea in the race to sign Lille winger Jonathan Ikone,

The right-sided player featured for Lille in Saturday’s season opener against Rennes, helping his team towards a 1-1 draw.

Interest looks rife though, with Brendan Rodgers set to go head-to-head with Frank Lampard to land the highly-rated French performer.

Last season Ikone scored four times and registered seven assists as Lille were sat nicely in fourth place prior to the cancellation of the campaign.

A former PSG player, the winger has collected four caps for the national team, having worked his way through the various age groups of Les Bleus’ youth ranks.

Leicester missed out on the Champions League on the final day of the 2019/20 campaign and that might hand Chelsea the edge for his signature.

Rodgers will embark on a campaign in the Europa League and it’s fair to suggest first-team opportunities would be more forthcoming in the East Midlands.

Ikone saw his teammate Nicolas Pepe depart for the Premier League last summer and he could now follow suit during the current transfer window.

claims Ikone is valued at £40 million and that valuation is perhaps more likely to suit Chelsea too.

With no Champions League football on the table, Leicester might have to spend wisely, although the pending sale of Ben Chilwell could help matters.

TBR View – Ikone would be sound signing for Leicester but they might need to move quickly

Rodgers is typically a pretty shrewd investor when it comes to the transfer market and if he wants Ikone the club will probably back him.

Attacking options would be ideal this summer and the 22-year-old would certainly represent a good investment for the future.

Rodgers will simply need to convince the exciting talent that plenty of first-team football is forthcoming at the King Power and he might get his man.

With Chelsea lurking though he will probably need to move quickly in order to get his man.
