Report: Leeds want South American right-back, recently linked with West Ham

Leeds United are interested in raiding River Plate for right-back Gonzalo Montiel this summer, weeks after reports claimed West Ham were set to complete the signing of the defender.

Montiel, 23, is regarded as one of the best right-backs in world football, yet to chance his arm in Europe. Indeed, Montiel has clocked up 91 appearances for River in all competitions – and earned four Argentina caps.

just over a fortnight ago that West Ham were closing in on the signing of Montiel after losing Pablo Zabaleta and Jeremy Ngakia. It was claimed a deal could be confirmed in ‘days’.

Nothing has been confirmed as of yet and Leeds are now set to rival West Ham for Montiel. It is believed the right-back could cost £15million, and is the second River defender to be linked with Leeds – after Lucas Martinez Quarta.

TBR’s view – Do Leeds really need Montiel?

Luke Ayling has been sensational on the right side of the Leeds defence of late, shining in their promotion-winning campaign – even having a hand in nine goals during 37 Championship appearances.

But Leeds do have little cover for Ayling. Gaetano Berardi is out of contract and has suffered an anterior cruciate ligament injury. Stuart Dallas can play there, but is left-footed, and Jamie Shackleton is naturally a midfielder.

So, although it would be harsh on Ayling, Montiel would be a much-needed, and excellent addition.
