Report: Leeds took 16-year-old Scottish Premiership talent on trial last week

that Leeds United took Hibernian’s 16-year-old talent Ethan Laidlaw on trial last week, amid interest from numerous Premier League clubs ahead of the summer transfer window.

Leeds are renowned for bringing in young players and nurturing them into first-team talents. The likes of Elia Caprile, Sam Greenwood, Pascal Struijk, Joe Gelhardt and Cody Drameh are recent examples of young players on the fringes of the first-team.

They have all been bought – from Chievo, Arsenal, Ajax, Wigan and Fulham respectively – but given the platform to develop at Thorp Arch, a platform that they might not necessarily have got elsewhere. Under Marcelo Bielsa, faith in youth is clear.

It is an attractive proposition for young players. Exciting, attacking football in a side that are happy to bring through younger players are are clearly on the up – having gained promotion last season and currently sitting in 12th place.

TBR’s view – Laidlaw is clearly a proper talent

Still only 16, Laidlaw signed his first professional contract at Easter Road in February – with suggesting that the plan was for the teenage striker to leave Hibs this summer on loan. But it could be more than that.

Having gone on trial already, just weeks after signing pro terms, suggests that it could be a permanent exit in the summer. Leeds have made their move, taking a looking at the forward last week, but numerous Premier League clubs are keen.

The Hibs website describes him as an “agile, quick, and skilful attacking player”. A future Premier League player, then.
