Report: Leeds set to lose out to PAOK in pursuit of free agent midfielder

that Ander Iturraspe is set to join PAOK this summer on a free transfer from Athletic Bilbao, despite being linked with a reunion at Leeds United with manager Marcelo Bielsa.

back in March that the 30-year-old midfielder was a target for Leeds and Bielsa. His contract at Bilbao is set to expire and the club have confirmed he will be released.

Spain international Iturraspe and Bielsa worked together during the latter’s time at Bilbao. The Argentine manager guided Bilbao to the Europa League and Copa Del Rey final in 2011-12.

But the chance of a reunion at Elland Road between Bielsa and Iturraspe has been overlooked by the midfielder, perhaps because the Whites failed to gain promotion to the Premier League.

The report claims that PAOK have been in contact with Iturraspe’s agent and they have agreed on wages among other things. It is likely, then, that Iturraspe will swap Spain for Greece, instead of Yorkshire.

TBR’s view

Failing to land Iturraspe is a blow, but it was always the belief that Leeds would not sign the Spaniard if they failed to gain promotion to the Premier League.

The maestro is known for his ability to dictate the tempo of play. He is very similar to how Kalvin Phillips’ played this season. On a free, he would have been an excellent signing.
