Report: Leeds and Newcastle scouting Celtic-owned Jack Hendry, £10m needed to complete complicated deal

that Leeds United and Newcastle United have been scouting Scottish defender Jack Hendry. The Celtic centre-back has been on loan at Belgian side KV Oostende who are expected to complete a permanent £2million move – but they could still cash in.

Hendry, 26, left Celtic on loan last summer after a tricky stint at Parkhead. He moved to Belgium, joining Oostende and impressed in his 30 appearances throughout the 2020-21 campaign. His form has even seen him return to the Scotland fold, and has been picked in the Euro 2020 side.

The lofty defender remains contracted to Celtic, but it is believed that Oostende are now set to complete a £2million permanent move for Hendry. But that is not ruling out a move to England – with Oostende ready to make a quick profit on the defender, if offers of £10million are tabled.

It is claimed that both Leeds and Newcastle are scouting ex-Dundee defender Hendry. Crystal Palace, Burnley, West Brom and Sheffield United are also taking a look at Hendry ahead of the summer window. The player himself has commented on his future, sparking doubt over a Celtic return.

Which club needs Hendry most? Leeds, Newcastle or another club?

Hendry has been in stunning form for Oostende and is showing the kind of form required to impress in the Premier League. But which club needs a centre-back? Leeds certainly do not need him. They have four central defenders – following the signings of Robin Koch and Diego Llorente.

Newcastle, though, could do with a centre-back – especially with Steve Bruce using a back three at times. Crystal Palace need additions all over the park, while Burnley might also need a defender but Hendry would be behind Ben Mee and James Tarkowski as options. Newcastle might be his best move.
