Report: Klopp now set to drop 25-year-old Liverpool player vs Napoli, £70k-a-week man expected to start

Liverpool manager Jurgen Klopp is now set to drop defender Joe Gomez ahead of their Champions League tie against Napoli.

Gomez was at fault for Leeds United’s first goal on Saturday evening, as Liverpool fell to another defeat this season.

His wayward back pass caught Allison Becker off guard and gave Rodrigo Moreno a simple tap-in in the opening minutes.

Robbie Fowler also criticised Gomez for his role in Nottingham Forest’s goal in their defeat last weekend.

The 25-year-old has been thrust back into the team after injuries to Konate and Joel Matip.

Initially he looked to have found his feet, impressing against Manchester City in a game Liverpool fans were hoping would turn around their season.

However, inconsistency continues to affect Klopp’s side, and now Gomez looks set to pay the price.

He’s not the only player who’s position in the side could be under threat after a number of poor performances.

Fabinho has looked a shadow of his former self this season, and is likely only keeping his place in the team right now due to injuries to other players.

Klopp to drop Gomez for Konate

hasn’t played since Liverpool’s demolition of Rangers three weeks ago.

However, he has been fit enough to make the bench for the Reds last two games.

The normally reliable Virgil Van Dijk has also been under the microscope this season for his performances.

Not to mention the constant spotlight on Trent Alexander-Arnold’s defensive capabilities.

Liverpool need to find a fix to their issues quickly to avoid completely falling out of contention for a place in next season’s Champions League.

Klopp decision to drop Gomez for Konate might be the start of that, but will all-but-end the Englishman’s chances of making a late run to go to the World Cup.

The Reds need a big win against Napoli to finish top of their group, before preparing for a huge match against Tottenham at the weekend.
