Report: Jesse Marsch does not think ‘great’ Leeds United player is ready for the Premier League
Jesse Marsch wanted a new forward on transfer deadline day and Leeds United ended up signing teenager Wilfried Gnonto.
Leeds wanted promising but more experienced options such as Cody Gakpo and Bamba Dieng but did not get them through the door.
They had a deal in place for Gnonto and although they had to pay more to get him in earlier, the claim it cost around £5 million.
They also report on what Marsch said in recruitment meetings about the Italian forward in terms of his readiness for the Premier League.
Marsch thinks Leeds new-boy Gnonto needs time
He does not feel that the Italian is a Premier League option right now and that he needs more time to get himself used to the division.
But how long will he take to get up to speed? Will he get there in time to make an impact sooner than January, when he might have come in anyway?
Would it have been better for him to remain in Switzerland, playing and developing, rather than coming to Leeds in the absence of a more senior option to be a back up?
Time will tell. That was Leeds’ initial idea but they do view him as a player who will be ready for the Premier League in the future.
Fabrizio Romano said to last month: “The most interesting one is Wilfried Gnonto,” said Romano.
“The Italian talent who is doing great with the national team under Roberto Mancini. Leeds like him. But it is not easy to negotiate with Zurich.”
Leeds did get the deal done for a relatively affordable sum but the question is when the frontman will now be ready to score goals in the top flight.
