Report: ‘In last few hours’, Newcastle have made attempt to sign 27-year-old defender
that ‘in the last few hours’, Newcastle United have opened talks over a move to sign Matthias Ginter from German side Borussia Monchengladbach – in an attempt to fend off interest from Inter Milan.
Ginter, 27, is out of contract at the end of the season. The chances are that he will leave for a cur-price fee in January, or go on a free next summer. Gladbach paid £14.5million () to sign him in 2017.
46-time Germany international Ginter is one of five players on Newcastle’s January shortlist. That list also includes Lloyd Kelly, Mo Elneny, Joe Rodon and Sven Botman – but Ginter could be cheap.
A new report from CM states that Inter Milan are also interested in signing Ginter. However, it is believed that ‘in the last few hours’, Newcastle have made an approach to sign Ginter as early as next month.

Ginter to Newcastle: German defender would be a stellar signing
The chances of Newcastle getting Ginter is small. The German defender is excellent in every department – intelligent, strong in the air,, a powerhouse. But also good enough on the ball to play as a holding midfielder.
He is exactly what Newcastle need in their fight against relegation. But with the likes of Inter and other big clubs likely to be after him – will a relegation scrap in the Premier League really tempt Ginter?
Newcastle must give him a blank cheque and tell him to write down a fee. He is simply that good, and that effective. A brilliant first move by the club’s new hierarchy, if true.
