Report: Hotspur Way insiders say 24-year-old is always brilliant on the ball in Tottenham training

Tottenham Hotspur winger Steven Bergwijn has had quite the rollercoaster ride at N17.

Spurs signed the Dutchman in January 2020, and he hit the ground running immediately at his new club.

Bergwijn marked his Tottenham debut with a superb volley en route to a superb 2-0 win over Manchester City.

The 24-year-old made it three goals in his first six Premier League games, including against Manchester United.

However, a number of injuries and loss of form meant Bergwijn failed to cement a regular starting place.

Indeed, going into the January transfer window, reports linked the Netherlands international with a move away.

Then, on Wednesday night, Bergwijn showed just what he’s capable of.

Antonio Conte brought him on as a 79th-minute substitute against Leicester, with Spurs chasing the game.

Bergwijn rewarded Conte with a dramatic injury-time brace to turn an all-but confirmed 2-1 loss into a 3-2 win.

Now, offloading Bergwijn would seem downright foolish.

“Far better at keeping the ball in tight spaces than say Lucas Moura or even Son Heung-min”

According to , he is not a player who Tottenham are trying to shift, like Tanguy Ndombele and Dele Alli.

In addition, insiders at the club rate him highly.

The outlet writes: “If you talk to those who watch him regularly at Hotspur Way what they will comment on is his reliability on the ball, his awareness, his technical security.

“He is far better at keeping the ball in tight spaces than say Lucas Moura or even Son Heung-min. Both of whom are far more explosive.

“He is certainly not seen as extravagant. And Bergwijn’s sound fundamentals and selflessness should appeal to Conte and his need for his players to give themselves up for the team.”

The Athletic also notes how Bergwijn is an introvert, with his shyness “coming across to some as aloofness”, and is hardly one to crave the spotlight.

What Bergwijn wants is regular game time, and now he has the springboard to try and cement a regular starting berth.

Ajax are reportedly still lurking and could wait until after the Spurs v Chelsea game to make another move.
