Report: Hertha need to sell Leeds target Matheus Cunha to sign Maxwel Cornet

Hertha have to sell Leeds United-linked Matheus Cunha first if they hope to land the name at the top of their own wishlist: former Whites summer target Maxwel Cornet, .

Cunha is wanted by a host of clubs after a campaign in which he scored eight goals and contributed eight assists in all competitions.

It appears that Hertha are keen to offload the 22-year-old. It was reported this week that his asking price had dropped from £30 million to just £21.5 million.

And perhaps the motivation behind that decision has now become apparent.

Of course, Cornet will not be an unfamiliar name to Leeds fans.

It was reported back in June that Cornet was a target for Marcelo Bielsa’s side. In fact, it was claimed that Leeds offered £10 million at one stage.

However, the Whites had backed away over Lyon’s £20 million asking price.

Could Cornet help Leeds land Cunha after Whites snubbed Ivory Coast international?

He may not be on the move to Elland Road this summer, but it does appear that Cornet could still do Leeds a big favour.

The Whites know that Hertha need to sell Cunha. And perhaps that may even encourage them to pursue an even lower price.

Obviously, that is not the only problem Leeds face. As noted by Bild, Inter Milan, Monaco and Napoli are also admirers.

But it is certainly a positive that Hertha really do need to offload the attacker.

Leeds’s defeats to Ajax on Wednesday highlighted that Bielsa’s men could potentially do with adding greater creativity to their ranks.

Cunha has done well in Germany. And he boasts an outrageous record for Brazil’s under-23s. So there is definitely scope for a future deal to prove inspired.
