Report: Graeme Jones is now telling Newcastle to go and sign ‘special’ £40m player this month

Graeme Jones is advocating that Newcastle United sign Youri Tielemans from Leicester City during the transfer window.

Jones was part of Roberto Martinez’s coaching staff with Belgium, which means he worked with the midfielder at international level.

And the report that Jones is urging the Magpies to make Tielemans the man they bring in to bolster their midfield options this month.

They claim Eddie Howe rates the playmaker highly too, and his contract expires at the end of the season, with little prospect at this stage of him signing a new one.

Jones wants Newcastle to sign Tielemans

The report says that Newcastle are not confident that the Foxes will let Tielemans depart the club this month, although that situation could change.

But yesterday, Leicester boss Brendan Rodgers : “I think that if someone doesn’t want to be here or someone wants too much money to be here, we have to be brave enough to say ‘listen, thank you very much and on you go’.

“Because we are not a club with masses of resources that can facilitate every single player’s need, especially from a financial side.

“A number of these guys are down to their last year. We said before we’d like them to stay but there has to be a point in time when what they want is too demanding for us as a club and if the time is right, they have to move on, then we have to do that and then look forward.”

The connection between Jones and Tielemans could be vital for Newcastle as they seek to win the race to sign Tielemans, who has been hailed as ‘‘ by Wes Morgan.

This month represents the last chance for Leicester to get a fee in for the midfielder, but it remains to be seen what their demands are.

It looked like Tielemans would move last summer, but he didn’t, so we will wait and see whether he does this time around or sits it out until the end of his Foxes contract.
