Report: Gerrard went to Tarkowski’s house for talks before Everton move

Steven Gerrard went to James Tarkowski’s house to discuss an Aston Villa move with the defender before he ultimately chose to join Everton this summer, .

Tarkowski joined the Toffees on a free transfer after his Burnley contract expired. His exit from Turf Moor looked to be on the cards for some time, long before they were relegated.

And with that, a host of sides were keen. Newcastle were reportedly admirers. Meanwhile, reports claimed that Aston Villa wanted the ‘outstanding’ centre-back.

Ultimately however, they missed out. But that was certainly not for the lack of trying.

In fact, that Gerrard travelled to Tarkowski’s house to make a presentation and sell a potential move to the England international.

It is a surprise that Tarkowski decided to join Everton over Villa. The Toffees only just stayed up last season. And it is not yet clear whether Frank Lampard really is the manager to take them forward.

It has also not been the easiest window at Goodison Park. Everton almost went a month without adding another signing after landing Tarkowski.

Villa meanwhile, have made some real statements of intent in the market. The arrivals of Diego Carlos, Boubacar Kamara and Philippe Coutinho all appear to be hugely exciting.

Villa, as a club, clearly have huge ambitions to challenge the heavyweights in the Premier League. And they do have the means to move right up the table.

Everton obviously have also. But after several disappointing windows, the club are not in a position to really splash the cash.

Obviously, other factors will have been involved in Tarkowski’s decision. But it does seem to be a call that he could ultimately rue.
