Report: Former £19m Everton target Nicolas De La Cruz could be available for free in the summer

Everton have previously found themselves linked with River Plate dynamo Nicolas de La Cruz with reports in May of last year that the Toffees would even consider paying his £19 million release clause.

However, that might not even be necessary, with De La Cruz potentially available on a free transfer.

. The report states that the Uruguayan midfielder is out of contract in January and will not sign a new deal with the Argentine giants unless they pay the remaining debt they owe his former club Liverpool, of Montevideo, not Anfield.

It could reportedly kill off any contract renewal with the report naming Everton as one of the teams likely to make a move for his services should his contract run out in June.

Of course, De La Cruz is an unproven commodity in European football but his high-energy possession-based style makes him a player the envy of many European clubs.

Everton would certainly have use for him somewhere in their side, especially alongside Allan in what would be an imposing midfield duo.

Time will tell if Everton turn their interest into something concrete but it certainly seems as though De La Cruz might be available for nothing this summer.
