Report: ‘First-class’ player is now planning his exit, after claims Villa and Newcastle are trying to sign him

Barkley’s Chelsea has been tricky to say the least, with the 28-year-old still one appearance short of reaching 100 league games for the Blues.

The former Everton midfielder spent a season on loan at Aston Villa, but didn’t do enough to nail down a Chelsea first team spot on his return, despite being called ‘first-class’ by former boss Frank Lampard.

Barkley lost his squad number at Chelsea for the second summer in a row, another indication that both parties feel that a change of scenery is the best course of action.

Villa and Newcastle target Barkley is planning Chelsea exit

Steven Gerrard is reportedly interested in bolstering his midfield, and Barkley returning to Villa Park is reportedly one option being considered.

Gerrard’s side lost their opening Premier League match against to newly promoted Bournemouth, and another it’s no surprise Gerrard has his eyes on another attack minded player.

Newcastle farer much better in their opening game, comfortably beating another new Premier League side Nottingham Forest.

Their attention has been firmly on James Maddison this summer, although a deal is currently proving difficult to negotiate.

And reports suggest that a bid for Barkley could be incoming if Eddie Howe’s side can’t get a deal for Maddison over the line.

Whether its Villa or Newcastle that finally get the deal done, Barkley needs to move on from Chelsea for the good of his career.
