Report: Fabinho injury could accelerate Liverpool’s £18m move for Sander Berge

Fabinho’s injury could reportedly prompt Liverpool to make a January transfer swoop.

, Liverpool could bring forward their plans to sign Sander Berge. With Fabinho currently out injured, Jurgen Klopp might sign Berge to strengthen his midfield options.

Berge is a promising young player who Liverpool have scouted firsthand this season. The 21-year-old currently plays for Belgian side Genk, who are in Liverpool’s Champions League group.

The towering holding midfielder stands at 6ft 5in tall and is known for his power and tenacity. With Fabinho out, Liverpool need to add some steel to the midfield and Berge is able to sit in between the defence and the more advanced midfielders.

Berge might be young but he has already played over 100 times for Genk, as well as nearly 50 games for Valerenga. The Norway international, who has 20 caps to his name, could now be set for a Premier League switch.

According to this report, it will cost Liverpool £18m to land Berge. Fabinho is out with ankle ligament damage so Berge might be joining Liverpool in the January window.

TBR’s view

Signing Berge in January gives Liverpool some short-term cover in midfield, as well as a long-term option. When Fabinho returns, Berge will find it tough to replace the Brazilian in the line-up as a regular.

But having that added competition can only be healthy. Liverpool could sign one of Europe’s most promising young midfielders.
