Report: Everton target manager Klopp called ‘one of the most successful’, contact already made
According to the , intermediaries have contacted Manuel Pellegrini over replacing Carlo Ancelotti as the next Everton manager.
Farhad Moshiri, the Toffees’ majority owner, had sought to appoint Pellegrini back in 2016 when searching for Roberto Martinez’s successor. He has now returned to the Chilean, after he led Real Betis to a sixth-place finish in La Liga to qualify for the Europa League.
Pellegrini only made two signings upon his arrival at the Benito Villamarin Stadium last summer in goalkeeper Claudio Bravo and centre-back Victor Ruiz. Yet the Verdiblancos’ return of 61 points was an improvement of 20 on their previous campaign.
Pellegrini signed a three-year contract with Betis, running to 2023, to return to management after eight months out. He was fired by West Ham United the previous December with the club above the relegation zone.
The Hammers lost nine of Pellegrini’s Premier League games, while Oxford United eliminated them from that year’s EFL Cup in the third round. West Ham also exited the 2018/19 FA Cup in the fourth round after losing 4-2 at AFC Wimbledon.
Pellegrini could now return to the Premier League if Moshiri fails to agree on personal terms with Nuno Espirito Santo. over the former Wolverhampton Wanderers coach’s financial demands and backroom staff plans.
Those concerns have led Moshiri to consider appointing Rafa Benitez, as well. The Toffees owner intends to hold talks with the Spaniard over moving to Goodison Park.
TBR’s view: Pellegrini a risk for Everton
Pellegrini may have won the Premier League when in charge of Manchester City in 2014 and done wonders with Real Betis. But Everton would be taking a risk by appointing the Chilean, as things turned sour quickly at West Ham.
Pellegrini arrived in east London to much clamour. Liverpool boss Jurgen Klopp him as ‘one of the most successful managers on the planet’. His first year at the London Stadium also saw the Hammers finish the Premier League season in 10th.
But just a few months later, he was out the door having spent big in the transfer market. He broke their record spend three times in a year on Issa Diop (), Felipe Anderson () and Sebastien Haller (). But players and lost belief in his system by the time he was fired.
