Ajax have wasted little time in trying to sign the 24-year-old. Reports claimed that they have offered £17 million for Bergwijn. However, Tottenham have rejected that offer.

It would be no surprise to see Ajax return with a fresh bid. But they are not the only side monitoring Bergwijn, with the that Everton also want the Netherlands international.

The Toffees will be looking to enjoy a busy summer after narrowly avoiding relegation from the Premier League. And it seems that Bergwijn is on Frank Lampard’s radar.

The problem Everton face is the funds that they will have to spend. , their budget for this summer is limited.

They will clear plenty of room on the wage bill. But they will need to sell first if they hope to spend significant amounts on transfer fees. So you would imagine that Everton would have to move someone on before they can fund a bid for Bergwijn.

Everton interested in Bergwijn

Everton fans may not be particularly enthused at the prospect of signing the former PSV Eindhoven man. His record for Tottenham is underwhelming, with just eight goals in 83 games.

In many ways, the worst thing Bergwijn did – now that he wants to leave – is score those two incredible goals at Leicester in January. That surely took a mid-season exit off the table. Antonio Conte suggested that he was a player with ‘‘ characteristics after that game.

You would imagine that Ajax would be favourites to sign him. He knows the Eredivisie well, and they can offer Champions League football.

But perhaps Everton are hoping to spring a surprise.
