Italian outlet have claimed that Everton are interested in signing AS Roma midfielder Gonzalo Villar in the January transfer window.

Rafa Benitez’s side have started the season incredibly well. They were impressive again at Old Trafford today and were arguably unlucky to have missed out on what would’ve been a very memorable victory over Manchester United.

Everton fans will be hoping that they can maintain the same kind of form throughout the season. Benitez, however, seems to have one eye on the January transfer market already.

The report claims that Villar is a target for the Toffees to strengthen their midfield in the winter window.

Gonzalo Villar to Everton?

The 23-year-old, after a disappointing spell at Valencia, returned to his boyhood club Elche in 2018 and made a fantastic name for himself. He was linked with a whole host of clubs last year, but Roma won the race for his signature.

Under Paulo Fonseca at the Italian capital, Villar impressed at times. He played 58 games under the former Roma boss and many expected him to kick on and become a regular for the Giallorossi this season.

However, Jose Mourinho doesn’t fancy him at all. Villar has played just three times under the Portuguese tactician this season. It really does look like he’ll be on his way out in January, and Everton could well be his next destination.

Carlo Ancelotti wanted Villar at Everton

Back in January 2020, when Villar was still at Elche, Everton were heavily linked with a move for him. () The report claimed that Carlo Ancelotti’s side had even made contact with the Spanish club over signing him.

The Toffees were in desperate need of reinforcement in the middle of the park then. Andre Gomes was ruled out for the rest of that season after his horrific injury, while Fabian Delph and Jean-Philippe Gbamin were sidelined as well.

Everton believed that Villar would’ve been a solid addition to their squad, but Roma pipped them for his signature. 18 months later now, the Toffees, under new management, are still reportedly keen, and their chances of signing him this time is probably a lot higher than in 2020.
