Report: Everton and Aston Villa told they can now sign ‘special’ England international this summer

Everton and Aston Villa are among the clubs who have been told they can sign Ross Barkley from Chelsea this summer.

The claim that Chelsea are keen to get rid of the 33-cap England international before the transfer window closes.

He has just 12 months left on his current contract, so the Blues are running out of time and chances to get a fee back for him.

Barkley has of course played for both clubs in the past and Chelsea have opened the door for him to re-join his former employers.

And a move to either club would see him get the chance to work under a legendary England midfielder in either Steven Gerrard or Frank Lampard.

The report that Villa are looking at signing another number eight before the transfer window closes.

But under Dean Smith, they turned down the chance to make Barkley’s loan move permanent, and they have existing options who would probably be ahead of him in their pecking order.

Barkley’s Everton exit was and it would remain to be seen how well any prospect of a return would go down with their fans.

Lampard does want some increased midfield creativity and played alongside Barkley as a Three Lions player, most notably at the 2014 World Cup.

At Everton, he was labelled a ‘‘ player by Roberto Martinez, but his career has stalled at Chelsea, where he has struggled for gametime and he needs a way out.
