Report: Europa League side want to sign four-goal Arsenal star on loan in January

Barcelona are pursuing an initial loan deal to sign Arsenal captain Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang in the January window. However, his £350,000-a-week wages are likely to prove a stumbling block.

Aubameyang, 32, has been axed from the Arsenal squad for the wins over Southampton, West Ham and Leeds. That is, after returning late having been granted time off to visit his Mother. It is not the first breach of discipline.

Now, it is expected that the Arsenal skipper will be forced to watch from the sidelines until he jets off to represent Gabon at the African Cup of Nations. He will do so, in the latter stages of this month.

The January window has suddenly come into the play for Aubameyang, who has just four goals in 14 Premier League games this season. Barcelona are keen, as Xavi looks to strengthen his options in the final third.

But given Barca’s financial woes, Aubameyang’s wages are expected to be a stumbling block. Arsenal may have to fork out a percentage. Manchester City’s Ferran Torres, and Manchester United’s Edinson Cavani are also options.

Aubameyang to Barcelona on loan: Good move for Arsenal?

Over the last three games, Arsenal have shown they do not need Aubameyang. Even with him in the side, the Gunners did not look as good as they did in the 4-1 win over Leeds – or the 2-0 victory against West Ham.

Gabriel Martinelli has four goals in his last six league games, the same amount as Aubameyang in less than half the amount of matches – also laying on two assists. If Barca pay half his wages, it is a good move for Arsenal.
