Liverpool transfer: Edwards set to complete £6.5m masterstroke, forgotten man linked with Liverpool exit

Liverpool striker Taiwo Awoniyi is set to leave Anfield without making a first-team appearance,. He’s set to sign for Bundesliga outfit Union Berlin.

The 23-year-old joined Liverpool in 2015 from the Imperial Academy in his homeland. Work permit issues have prevented him from ever making an impact on Merseyside.

He has spent several years out on loan. Awoniyi has played for NEC Nijmegen, Royal Excel Mouscron, Gent, 1.FSV Mainz and spent last season with Union Berlin.

During 2020/21, he found the net five times from 22 appearances. His form was sufficient enough, however, to tempt the Bundesliga club into a permanent deal.

It is anticipated that Liverpool will recoup £6.5 million for the player they signed for just six years ago.

Interestingly, Awoniyi has been training with the Liverpool team in Austria. He was actually awarded a work permit this year and could have been in line for a Reds debut.

Boss Jurgen Klopp has run the rule over him though and is now keen to offload him this summer.

Getting £6.5 million for a player who has barely trained with Liverpool, let alone played for the club, is nothing short of masterful.

At 23, Awoniyi does still have time on his side. The fact he is heading to one of the Bundesliga’s lesser ranks, however, suggests the club are doing the right thing.

The Nigerian needs to play regular football and he won’t do that at Anfield any time soon. As a result, this looks like a sensible decision by Liverpool.

Scraping £6.5 million into the club’s coffers is no bad thing and it could go towards a stellar signing to bolster Klopp’s squad in the near future.
