Dean Smith still wants Aston Villa to add a defensive midfielder this summer, .

Looking for recruits

Villa are flushed with cash having just sold Jack Grealish – although they have invested some of it in other areas of their side already.

The claret and blues may not be finished in the market though, and the signing of a defensive midfielder is one which is said to be high on the list of priorities for the club.

Villa have pushed heavily for James Ward-Prowse but in the latest update it says that he is now unlikely to come, with Southampton fighting off interest in him.

Villa’s main problem in midfield stems from the fact that Douglas Luiz may not be available for the first few weeks of the season, after representing Brazil at the Olympics.

Doubts over Nakamba?

Marvelous Nakamba looks set to step in, but there are doubts over his suitability to play regularly.

Villa do also have the option of playing Morgan Sanson or John McGinn in a more defensive role, but ideally Smith would like to add another to his group.

The identity of the target is not yet known, but the report does add intrigue over Villa’s next move in what has been an impressive window for the Midlands side so far.
