Report: David Luiz wants deal until 2022, Arsenal not willing

is suggesting why contract negotiations regarding a new deal for David Luiz have been so protracted.

It emerged as something of a surprise recently when it was suggested Luiz was out of contract in the summer and potentially on his way out of The Emirates.

It was widely believed that Arsenal handed the Brazilian a two-year deal after signing him from Chelsea last summer. However, that deal was actually a one-year deal with the option of a one-year extension which Arsenal have not yet activated.

it is down to Luiz’s desire for an extra year on top.

They claim the Brazilian wants an extension to his £120,000-a-week deal that will keep him at Arsenal until the summer of 2022.

The Gunners are reluctant to sanction such a lengthy deal for a player in his 30s and on that wage. It is suggested the deal could be considered, but Luiz would have to drastically reduce his salary demands.

Luiz struggled in his Premier League comeback this week, making costly errors against Manchester City in a 3-0 loss and admitted post-match that his contract situation has not helped matters.

But Mikel Arteta is a fan of the player and, , the Spaniard stuck by his defender in a press conference yesterday, suggesting he will continue ‘to defend him with everything I have because I believe in him’.

But with his contract dispute dragging on, Luiz is set to become a free agent on July 1st. If no agreement is reached by then, the Brazilian may have already played his last game for the Gunners.
