According to a report from , Tottenham Hotspur boss Antonio Conte was keen to sign Inter Milan midfielder Marcelo Brozovic in the January transfer window.

The winter window was mostly a frustrating one for Spurs fans until the last few days. Tottenham really came to life and completed deals for Dejan Kulusevski and Rodrigo Bentancur.

The Uruguayan was a priority signing. Spurs were short of options in the middle of the park after Dele Alli, Giovani Lo Celso and Tanguy Ndombele were all told they weren’t in Conte’s plans.

Bentancur ended up being the one, but if the report is to be believed, Conte originally wanted another midfielder from the Serie A.

Marcelo Brozovic rejected Conte and Tottenham

Conte knows Brozovic really well thanks to their time together at Inter Milan. The Croatian become a real star under the now-Spurs boss, which is why he became a target in last month’s window.

The report claims that Conte tried to get Brozovic to Spurs in January but the midfielder, who only has six months left on his contract, ‘immediately declined’ that offer.

It has been claimed that Brozovic’s priority is to stay and extend his deal at Inter Milan and he also rejected advances from the likes of Newcastle United and Barcelona.

That’s why Tottenham focused their attention on Bentancur and Fabio Paratici got that deal done.

TBR View:

Brozovic is exactly the type of midfielder Tottenham need. The Croatian, labelled as a ‘‘ player by ex-Spurs boss Jose Mourinho, played a massive part in helping Inter win the league under Conte last season.

It is no surprise that the Tottenham boss would have loved to have Brozovic, but he shouldn’t be too upset considering that he has just signed a quality player in Bentancur.

The Uruguayan is not on the same level as Brozovic yet but he is a very good midfielder in his own right. He will fit into Tottenham’s side really well and he could well become a star under Conte very, very soon.
