Report: Club to slash price of £40m striker who apparently wanted Spurs move in January

Reported Tottenham Hotspur target Michy Batshuayi is set to be “one of the first out the door” at Chelsea this summer for a knockdown price, according to .

Batshuayi has struggled for game time at Chelsea for much of his career at Stamford Bridge – he’s been on the Blues’ books since his reported £33million move () in the summer of 2016 and in that time he has made a relatively low 77 appearances, though he’s still managed to claim 25 goals and six assists ().

This term, meanwhile, he has clocked up just 656 minutes of action in 25 senior appearances, but still managed six goals and two assists (), not to mention his impressive Belgium record () and while out on loan too, particularly at Borussia Dortmund and Crystal Palace.

With Batshuayi’s contract up at the end of next season, this summer is the last opportunity for Chelsea to cash in, as he could go for a lot lower next January and ultimately leave for nothing next summer, and believes that the Blues will twist rather than stick.

The outlet also claims that Chelsea were initially hoping to raise £40million from his sale but they “know” they will have to significantly drop their asking price given the financial impact within the industry caused by the suspension of football in wake of the global health crisis.

suggested that Batshuayi wanted to move to Spurs in the January transfer window, after Jose Mourinho’s side were linked with signing him, but should they be interested in him again, they could come up against London rivals West Ham United, who have been linked with his services.

TBR View:

Tottenham’s gamble not to sign a striker this season backfired massively prior to the football suspension, with both Harry Kane and Son Heung-min out of action long-term, and Spurs will not want the same happening again going forward.

Batshuayi is a high-calibre player for whom it’s simply not happened at Chelsea, but his scoring record has been excellent for most of his career, with a style of play that previously compared to Didier Drogba thanks to his speed, strength, positioning and link-up play.

And at 26 years of age, on a £90,000-a-week contract () – not stratospheric when you consider high-level strikers in the prime of their career – and potentially going for a knockdown price, he appears to tick a lot of boxes for Spurs.
