Report: Club offer their ‘extraordinary’ player £500k-a-week to stay, after claims Newcastle want to sign him

Newcastle United’s chances of luring Paul Pogba to Tyneside in the summer could be dashed if reports coming out of Manchester United are true.

The World Cup winner’s contract at Old Trafford expires at the end of June and the 29-year-old looked set to leave the Red Devils on a free transfer for the second time in his career. United re-signed the academy graduate for a world-record .

However, according to the , Manchester United are reportedly facing a backlash from the squad after the Frenchman was offered fresh terms which will make him the Premier League’s highest-paid player.

United are understood to be willing to offer the former Juventus man a basic salary of £400,000-a-week, with add-ons potentially taking it up to the half-a-million mark.

It has been claimed that the offer on the table for United’s number six hasn’t gone down well in the dressing room and the feeling is that Pogba’s performances since returning to the Theatre of Dreams don’t warrant the eye-watering wages he would be on.

Cristiano Ronaldo is United’s current highest earner, taking home £450,00-a-week, followed by goalkeeper David De Gea, who is on £375,000-a-week.

Jadon Sancho and Raphael Varane earn £300,000-a-week, Bruno Fernandes is on £250,000-a-week, with skipper Harry Maguire netting £200,000-a-week.

report that Newcastle are interested in Pogba, but their chances of enticing the mercurial France international to St James’ Park already seemed rather slim given the likes of Paris Saint Germain, Juventus and Real Madrid had been linked with a move for Pogba.

But given the reported figure United are reportedly willing to offer Pogba in order for him to commit his future to the Reds, the Magpies would be best served walking away from any potential interest they have in the playmaker.

Pogba and his agent Mino Raiola’s demands could upset a harmonious dressing room which Eddie Howe has assembled.

PIF may want to make a statement signing and unveiling Pogba on a free transfer would represent quite the coup, but it’s hard to envisage his move to the Toon Army being anything more than financially motivated.

At the age of 29, he wants to win trophies and Newcastle’s ambitious project isn’t yet in that position to be competing for major honours.

, but he is quite the enigma and it shouldn’t be a puzzle Newcastle are willing to try and risk solving.
