Report: Club now expecting fresh bid from Newcastle for £38m powerhouse who’s ‘like a train’

With six days left of the January transfer window, Newcastle United are still seeking to bolster their ranks.

However, the Magpies haven’t had much luck over the past 24 hours.

The Diego Carlos to Newcastle saga appears to be at an end.

And Robin Gosens is reportedly edging towards a move towards Inter.

However, one Newcastle lead still seems very much active, namely that of Duvan Zapata.

have provided an update on the state of play regarding the Atalanta star.

The report begins on a somewhat low note, claiming Zapata’s club has rejected Newcastle’s initial bid.

The Magpies are apparently willing to pay an £8million loan fee with an obligation to buy for another £30million – including bonuses – if they stay up.

Now, Atalanta reportedly turned down the offer because they want the obligation to kick in regardless of Newcastle’s Premier League status.

As it stands, the Magpies are not willing to sanction that deal, claim 90Min.

However, talks between the two sides are continuing.

Let’s face it, no other relegation-threatened clubs out there would be asked by a selling club to fulfil an obligation to buy even if they drop into the second division.

However, clubs the world over are aware that Newcastle have money.

This is proving a double-edged sword for the Magpies. Sure, they can afford to buy world-class players, but at the same time, everyone knows it.

Zapata is a top player who’s “” when he’s on form, and Newcastle would benefit from him in their ranks.

However, if the report is true, then the Magpies need to stand their ground – if they go down, there should be no obligation to buy.
