Report claims Wolves in talks to appoint title-winning coach as Nuno Espirito Santo’s replacement
Wolves are in talks to appoint former Benfica manager Bruno Lage as Nuno Espirito Santo’s replacement ahead of next season.
According to , the 45-year-old has flown into England to hold talks with the Midlanders. Jorge Mendes’ trusted deputy Valdir Cardoso, of agency Gestifute is assisting proceedings alongside Chairman Jeff Shi and technical director Scott Sellars.
Despite the advancement of the deal, the club had claimed that no deal has been agreed.
Lage has been a free agent since having his contract terminated with the Liga NOS outfit at the end of last season, 2019/2020.
Nuno leaves the Molineux Stadium after four years with the club, earning promotion and finishing in seventh place for consecutive Premier League campaigns.
However, the side have largely struggled this term and ended it with a 2-1 loss at home to Manchester United, finishing in the bottom-half of the division.
TBR View: Lage proves risky appointment
Lage’s time in the Portuguese top-flight has been a mixed bag. Whilst he won the title in his very first season with Benfica, he struggled in his second campaign, and as a result offered his resignation.
However, his two years with the Lisbon-based outfit is the only senior managerial job he has on his CV, creating a potential problem should he land the Wolves role.
Whilst he has some sort of experience, managing in England will prove to be a far trickier job than in Portugal. Benfica has proven to be a juggernaut in the coach’s homeland over the last decade or so, somewhat clouding their domestic success.
Mikel Arteta’s struggled with an expensively assembled Arsenal squad bears testament to that, although it should be mentioned it’s his first role in professional management.
There’s a lot of risks attached to appointing Lage as Nuno’s replacement. The squad has shown over this season that there need to be wholesale changes and picking a man who has only ever managed a dominant force is a risky option.
