Report claims stumbling block for Liverpool in Weston McKennie pursuit

Liverpool are still keen on taking Weston McKennie to Anfield during the summer, although there could be a stumbling block towards any potential deal.

the American could leave Schalke this summer with financial clouds hanging over the Bundesliga outfit.

They value McKinnie at and that makes a move to England the most likely for the 21-year-old.

however, claim that the central midfielder wants to head to a club where he can feel confident about his chances of development.

Liverpool have a plethora of midfield stars with Jordan Henderson, Gini Wijnaldum, James Milner, Naby Keita, Fabinho and Curtis Jones all battling for shirts.

With that in mind, it seems unlike that McKennie would instantly become a first-team regular and his development could stutter.

Manchester City, Everton, Newcastle and Wolves are all thought to be interested in the youngster too.

Schalke endured a miserable 2019/20 campaign, failing to win any of their games following the restart.

The maestro has 19 caps for his country and has operated in a number of positions over the past 12 months.

Under David Wagner he has played largely in his natural central midfield role; although he has helped out as a defensive midfielder, right midfielder and even at centre-back.

TBR View – Persuading McKennie to head to Anfield could be a shrewd move

At 21, the future looks bright for the United States international. Having played 75 games in the Bundesliga it’s no surprise that he doesn’t want to go and sit on the bench somewhere.

Could Jurgen Klopp tempt McKennie into making an exception for Europe’s most successful club of the last two years though?

The Liverpool boss is a master at developing players and with Henderson and Milner not getting any young, McKennie would surely play plenty of football.

At £20 million the midfielder would represent a bargain and he’d complement Liverpool’s quota of midfield options just nicely.

He is comfortable in possession, versatile and possesses strong energy levels.

Liverpool might need to move quickly but McKennie should be a man they are pursuing this summer.
