Report claims Mike Ashley will hold talks with Steve Bruce over his future at Newcastle

Steve Bruce will have a series of meetings over the next few weeks with Newcastle United owner Mike Ashley over his future at the club.

According to , despite the Geordies having retained their Premier League status, there still seems to be some uncertainty over the future of the 60-year-old.

The northeast outfit will once again play in the top-flight after Fulham’s loss at home to Burnley consigned them to Championship football for next season. But, that hasn’t stopped the manager from receiving merciless criticism in the wake of his comments on a couple of days ago.

The go on to claim that the former Manchester United defender’s future is far from secure with elements such as player recruitment and transfer budgets playing a key role in deciding whether he remains at the club or not.

TBR View: Bruce must walk away amid various factors

Whether or not you think Bruce is the right man for the job is irrelevant, the fact of the matter is he’s done the job he was hired to do.

Keeping Newcastle in the Premier League is considered an achievement in itself by higher authorities, however, when you look at the squad, should that really be the ultimate target for this once-great club?

With talents like Allan Saint-Maximin, Callum Wilson, and Miguel Almiron leading the attack, there should be higher ambitions from the St James’ Park team.

And their positioning in 17th is a damning indictment to the poor management ability of Bruce, who despite achieving the target set by the board has ultimately struggled.

Another key factor over why the man should leave is the relentless abuse aimed at him. A simple search of his name on Twitter’s search bar highlights the extent to which the supporters loathe one of their own, and as mentioned before, the interview with talkSPORT didn’t help his cause.

Imagine the terraces when fans return to the stadium next season. Bruce will be lucky to escape any sort of verbals and for that reason, should consider walking away.

Bruce himself and those around him are reasons why he simply must step down. Whether he’s good enough is irrelevant, should a man take this much abuse and continue in a role where he’s universally hated?
