Report claims Arsenal player could help Liverpool complete loan-to-buy deal
Schalke have enquired about Arsenal defender Shkodran Mustafi,
The German defender has fallen out of favour at the Emirates Stadium and is out of contract at the end of the season.
Mustafi has been in North London since 2016, playing 151 times for Gunners during his time at the club.
He has made just three substitute appearances in the Premier League this season, with Mikel Arteta preferring other defenders.
It seems unlikely now that his contract will be extended and a departure looks inevitable.
The snippet claims that Arsenal could allow Mustafi to leave before tonight’s deadline for just £1.7 million.
Schalke are rock bottom of the Bundesliga with just one win in 19 matches this season.
An experienced older head in their ranks could be ideal and Mustafi would surely relish the chance to play regular football again.
Interestingly the move could help Liverpool solve a crisis of their own.
The Reds are hoping to tie up a loan-to-buy deal for Ozan Kabak before tonight’s deadline.
Schalke will only let the Turkish star depart if they can identify a replacement – and that could be Mustafi.
The World Cup-winning defender has won the FA Cup twice during his time at the Emirates Stadium.
It’s fair to say, however, that inconsistency has robbed him of a chance to become a true Arsenal hero.
The 28-year-old has come in for some criticism from supporters and in the last 12 months his form has really tailed off.
With Gabriel, David Luiz, Rob Holding and Pablo Mari all ahead of him in the pecking order, the time looks right for Mustafi to move on.
