Report: Charlton Athletic set to beat Leeds United to signing of Leyton Orient striker Macauley Bonne

Leyton Orient striker Macauley Bonne is reportedly heading to the Championship. , Charlton Athletic are closing in on Bonne.

Charlton are set to beat a host of clubs to the signing of Bonne. Leeds United were said to be leading the race back in November, alongside Derby County and Nottingham Forest ().

But it is the newly-promoted Addicks who look like winning the race. The South London club will beat Leeds and other Championship rivals for the ex-Ipswich Town and Colchester United striker.

Bonne has been with Leyton Orient for two seasons. His tally of 22 goals in 45 appearances helped the O’s to a mid-table finish in the National League in 2017/18.

That set the platform for success in 2018/19. With 23 goals in 46 games, Bonne spearheaded Leyton Orient’s title-winning campaign under the guidance of the late Justin Edinburgh.

But after helping the East London outfit secure a return to the Football League, he is now moving south of the River Thames. The 23-year-old will test himself in the second tier, jumping up three divisions from last season.

TBR’s view

With 45 goals in just two seasons at Brisbane Road, it is clear that Bonne is a goalscoring striker. While other aspects of his game need work, there is no questioning his desire, work-rate and ability to find the net.

Whether he can replicate that form in the Championship is another question. But for just £200k, the Zimbabwe international could be the bargain that got away for Leeds.
