Report: Celtic identify Mathias ‘Zanka’ Jorgensen as summer target

that Celtic have identified Huddersfield Town centre-back Mathias ‘Zanka’ Jorgensen as a summer target, with a new centre-back desperately needed.

Indeed, Neil Lennon has been forced to wave goodbye to Dedryck Boyata who has joined German Bundesliga side Hertha Berlin on a free transfer. Meanwhile, Filip Benkovic has returned to Leicester City following his loan.

It leaves Lennon with just Kris Ajer, Jozo Simunovic, Jack Hendry and Marvin Compper as options at centre-back. Indeed, the latter are hardly good enough for the first team and could even leave Parkhead.

That has led to the Scottish champions being linked with the 23-time Denmark international, who suffered relegation with the Terriers last season. It is likely to tempt Jorgensen with a move away.

An experienced centre-back, 29-year-old Jorgensen has clocked up 270 outings for FC Copenhagen and even played for PSV Eindhoven. He is known for finding the back of the net too, scoring 24 career goals.

TBR’s view – Jorgensen is crucial for Celtic

As aforementioned, Celtic’s lack of options at the heart of their defence is worrying. But what is perhaps more worrying, is their lack of action compared to direct rivals Rangers.

The Gers are closing in on their seventh signing of the summer, and are looking stronger than ever under Steven Gerrard. Celtic are set to make their first signing, but plenty of other recruits are needed.

A nee centre-back with plenty of experience in European competition is absolutely pivotal, one that can play alongside Ajer at the back. Jorgensen is perfect, especially with his contract expiring next summer.
