Report: Celtic have second offer turned down for English talent, almost £700k
that Scottish champions Celtic have seen a second offer for Charlton Athletic winger Alfie Doughty turned down, believed to be worth in the region of almost £700,000.
Doughty, 20, caught the attention of numerous clubs including Celtic after breaking into Charlton’s senior side under Lee Bowyer last season. Able to play on both flanks, the London-born wide man played 30 times for the Addicks.
He scored two goals and created three more in 29 Championship matches and has started the 2020-21 campaign well, too – netting in a 2-0 win over Crewe in League One. He has entered the final 12 months of his contract.
Celtic tried a tentative, initial approach of £400,000 which was knocked back, before returning with an offer of £650,000 – but that too has been rejected. Charlton want more money, but are also keen to keep Doughty. Luton have also seen a bid rejected.
TBR’s view – Doughty showing plenty of potential
Not only is he showing potential, but the Hoops could do with additions on the flanks. Neil Lennon boasts just Mo Elyounoussi, James Forrest and Mikey Johnston as senior options out wide – and Doughty would be excellent cover.
If the Hoops can nab his signature for less than £1million, then it is excellent business for Lee Bowyer’s side. But anything above that figure and it makes more sense for Celtic to sign him on a pre-contract deal in January.
One boost for the Hoops could be that Doughty is represented by the same agency, Beswick Sports LTD, as Lewis Morgan – who recently left Celtic for David Beckham’s Inter Miami.
