Report: Celtic face Barnsley competition in pursuit of Motherwell starlet David Turnbull

Barnsley have entered the race for Motherwell wonderkid David Turnbull, according to the print edition of The Sun on Sunday (9th June, page 61).

Turnbull has been heavily linked with Celtic in recent weeks. , Celtic have made an enquiry about the £3m-rated starlet.

But Barnsley could try to lure him to England instead. The Sun reports that the Tykes, who won promotion last season, want Turnbull and have launched a £1m bid.

Barnsley won promotion to the Championship (England’s second tier) via the automatic spots. And the Yorkshire outfit want Turnbull to bolster their options.

The 19-year-old has been shining at Motherwell. In 34 games last season, he scored 16 goals and provided seven assists, operating in a central midfield position or out on the left.

Celtic are desperate to snap up the Scotland U21 international. Rivals Rangers signed Jake Hastie from Motherwell but the Bhoys want to win the race for Turnbull.

However, , Premier League side Bournemouth are also in the hunt. The Cherries will rival Barnsley and Celtic for the talented teenager.

As well as Turnbull, Barnsley also want Derby County’s Luke Thomas. The 20-year-old spent last season on loan at Coventry City and Barnsley have bid £1m for the left-footed winger.
