Report: Celtic eye move for Premiership defender Declan Gallagher

Celtic are lining up a summer move for Motherwell defender Declan Gallagher,

Premier League clubs will also be in the mix for the defender. West Bromwich Albion, Sheffield United and Burnley are all thought to be keen.

It could be a fierce scrap to sign the defender, with the 30-year-old’s contract up at Fir Park during the summer.

Championship sides Cardiff City and Barnsley are in the mix but it’s likely that Celtic’s interest will turn Gallagher’s head.

The Motherwell man might feel he has some unfinished business at Parkhead. He came through the youth ranks with the Hoops but was released without making a first-team appearance.

Since then he has spent his time working his way through the Scottish pyramid playing for Clyde, Dundee, Stranraer and Livingston before finding his way to Motherwell.

Gallagher has captained his team this season, making 30 appearances, scoring one goal.

He is now a regular member of Steve Clarke’s national team and he still has plenty of time left ahead of him.

TBR View: Gallagher could be a shrewd signing

Celtic will need to cut their cloth accordingly during the summer as they bid to wrestle their crown back off Rangers.

The Hoops will hope for a couple of stellar signings but Gallagher could still prove a useful addition.

He knows the division, wouldn’t cost a penny in the way of a transfer fee and is an extremely capable defender.

Some of Celtic’s defending this season has been abysmal and his presence among the back four could offer a vast improvement in that area for next season.

The Hoops could do a lot worse than pursue Gallagher.
