Report: Celtic could be about to lose up-and-coming defender

The Scottish Sun have claimed that Celtic could be about to lose highly-rated attacker Liam Morrison to German Bundesliga side Hoffenheim ahead of the summer window.

Just 16 years of age, Morrison could be the latest British talent to move to a German club. David Bates left Rangers to join Hamburg, while Jadon Sancho is shining for Borussia Dortmund after leaving Manchester City.

The report claims Scotland youth international Morrison is widely-regarded as the best centre-back talent in Scottish football. He has turned out five times for Scotland’s Under-17 side.

Former Celtic scout David Moss has since become an agent, and he is said to be advising the Hoops youngster. Celtic are said to be ‘desperate’ to offer Morrison a new deal, but Hoffenheim could prove tantalising.

The Hoops are lacking in numbers at the heart of their defence. Dedryck Boyata’s contract is set to expire, while Filip Benkovic is likely to return to Leicester City at the end of the season.

TBR’s view

Keeping Morrison has to be a priority for Celtic. Scottish clubs lack the financial power of those in Europe’s best divisions. If Celtic are to make a profit, keeping players with resale value is key.

Yes, Celtic would receive compensation for Morrison. But in a few years’ time, he has the potential to become a regular for Celtic – just like Kieran Tierney has done.

Tierney has since captained Celtic and Scotland, and is being talked about in the £20million bracket. So keeping Morrison may not only improve Celtic on the pitch, but off it too.
