Report: Celtic and Rangers rivalling Premier League side for Dejan Ljubicic

both Celtic and Rangers are keen on Rapid Vienna midfielder Dejan Ljubicic this summer – but face competition from Premier League side Southampton, and promotion hopefuls Brentford.

Ljubicic, 22, joined Rapid’s youth academy aged just eight years old and has since clocked up 100 senior appearances for the Austrian giants, despite his tender age. He is a regular with his country’s Under-21 side.

Mainly a defensive midfielder, Ljubicic can also operate as a centre-back. He had almost moved to the MLS in January, as Chicago Fire looked to sign the Austrian ace – only for injuries to prevent his departure.

Now, Ljubicic has entered the final 12 months of his contract and it looks inevitable that he is to leave Rapid. Brentford are leading the race, with £2million required. But Celtic and Rangers are also keeping tabs.

TBR’s view – Ljubicic would be a bargain at just £2m

Austrian football, though not recognised as one of the hardest divisions in European football, is still a very strong standard. For Ljubicic, then, to have clocked up 100 senior outings for Rapid is impressive.

Of those 100, 12 have come in the Europa League and he may be remembered by Rangers fans for scoring the only goal of the game in a 1-0 win over Steven Gerrard’s side back in December 2018.

At £2million, he is a bargain. A no-brainer for any of the clubs interested.
