Report: Celtic and Newcastle among clubs interested in James McCarthy

Celtic and Newcastle United are reportedly two of the clubs interested in signing Crystal Palace’s James McCarthy.

The midfielder’s contract at Premier League club Palace will remain unclear until they sort out their managerial situation, with his current deal at Selhurst Park due to expire at the end of the season.

, McCarthy would be open to staying with Palace if he’s offered a contract extension beyond this season. However, there is already interest from elsewhere.

The report states that Celtic are “very keen” on the 30-year-old’s signature, plus English top-flight duo Newcastle and Burnley are potential suitors for him.

McCarthy, who earns £50,000-a-week (), is an experienced central midfielder who has played 269 games in the Premier League.

TBR’s View:

With McCarthy’s deal currently out of contract this summer, all three of the clubs circling for his signature know they could get him on a free transfer.

As he will cost no transfer fee, it looks like an attractive deal for Celtic, Newcastle and Burnley.

The 42-time capped Republic of Ireland international is a combative central midfielder with great energy, and he’s composed with the ball at his feet.

However, it’s worth noting that he’s had his fair share of bad luck with injuries during the last few years that has held him back.
