Report: Cellino has approached international in last few hours following Leeds exit this summer

Gaetano Berardi could be offered the chance to join Massimo Cellino following his emotional exit from Leeds United, that Brescia are one of the sides to have approached the defender.

Berardi is now a free agent after seven years at Elland Road. In that time, the 32-year-old became a cult-hero.

His time with Leeds culminated in a Premier League debut on the penultimate day of last season. He was then given a hero’s reception as he made his last Whites appearance against West Brom.

Berardi has subsequently confirmed that Leeds offered him the chance to stay. But he decided that the time was right to look elsewhere.

And his search for a new home could see him link up with a familiar face.

, Berardi has been approached by Brescia and SPAL in the last few hours.

A move to Brescia would see Berardi sign for Cellino. It was during the Italian’s time as Leeds owner that the defender joined.

A move to Filippo Inzaghi’s side would also see Berardi rejoin his first club. The versatile centre-back made over 100 appearances for the side before leaving for Sampdoria in 2012.

So he may well struggle to turn down a return.

Berardi showed in final Leeds appearances he has more to give as Cellino makes approach

It was a turbulent final 12 months at Leeds for Berardi. He signed a new deal to try and help Marcelo Bielsa’s side secure promotion last year.

Ultimately, Leeds got there. But it came at a cost for Berardi. He sustained an injury in the penultimate game at Derby that ruled him out for the majority of the following campaign.

Cruelly, promotion had already been secured by that point.

But Berardi came back, playing the final two games of last season. And he did not look out of place at the very highest level.

He has a lot more to give. And Leeds fans will be very keen to keep an eye on how he gets on – particularly if he is reunited with Cellino.
